Explain the Brain

August 10th - August 11th, 2018

In this mini course neuroscientists Sebastian & Tiina Hormigo will be providing a two part introduction to the field of neuroscience.

"Why is learning a new language so difficult? Neurolinguistics"

In this session we will start with a brief history of Neuroscience, how we passed from seeing the brain as a shapeless blub of matter to a highly organized, highly-preforming specialized structure. We will then move to discussing neurolinguistics, how the brain acquires and retains language and allows us to efficiently communicate with each other, including learning second languages.

"When the brain gets hacked: Addictions"

In this session we will focus our discussion on defining what addiction really is, and the neural circuits involved in addictive behaviors from the physiological and psychosocial points of view. We will try to give a compelling answer to why it is so difficult to come up with effective treatments for this historic scourge.

Both of these sessions will include a potluck-style meal. Bring something to share (main or side dishes, dessert, etc.) and everybody will be able to try different stuff. Sebastian & Tiina will serve wine on Friday night and mimosas on Saturday morning.

They are hoping to have an interactive time, meaning that these are sessions open to questions, discussions, and some hands-on activities.
